Yes, 30 seconds of extra time will be granted to each batter at the conclusion of each regulation period. A hitter can earn an additional 30 seconds of bonus time -- giving him 60 seconds total -- if he hits at least two homers that equals or exceeds 440 feet (tracked by MLB’s Statcast powered by Google Cloud) in the regulation period. If two players are tied at the end of their matchup, each player will get an additional 60 seconds to break the tie.
The winner of the 1 vs. 8 matchup will play the 4 vs. 5 winner in the semifinals, while the 2 vs. 7 winner will go up against the 3 vs. 6 winner. This year’s Home Run Derby takes place at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. The exciting element to this ballpark for both fans and players is the altitude it sits , which causes balls to carry much further than most ballparks. That awarded Coors Field the most home run-friendly venue in the MLB in multiple seasons.
NFL players who were egregiously snubbed for the 2022 Pro Bowl roster
Milwaukee's slugging phenom Jesus Aguilar has the opportunity to reverse the curse of the top seeds Monday, as he faces Hoskins in the first round and the winner of the Kyle Schwarber-Alex Bregman matchup in the second round. In each of the first three years of the new bracketed format, the top seed has been eliminated before the final, with Giancarlo Stanton going out in the first round to Gary Sanchez a year ago at Marlins Park. Although he's hit seven home runs in 63 games at Nationals Park, Freeman's total in the nation's capital is fewer than the number of round-trippers he's bashed in the other four NL East stadiums. Washington's Bryce Harper will have the most attention paid to him, as he tries to win the event in his home ballpark. Three of the seven NL participants are used to hitting in Nationals Park, as they hail from the NL East, while a pair of teammates and two slugging phenoms round out the senior circuit's representatives. The 2018 Home Run Derby is here, with eight players competing in three rounds at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
It was just the fifth and sixth rounds of 20 or more home runs in 52 total rounds since this new timed, bracketed format was introduced in 2015. Schwarber was the first left-handed batter of the competition, and was also the first hitter to earn the 30 second bonus by hitting two shots of at least 440 feet. Schwarber had 14 home runs in his four minutes, then added two more in his extra 30 seconds, giving Bregman a big number of 16 to shoot at. This is the first Home Run Derby title for Harper, who was the runner-up to Yoenis Cespedes in the 2013 Home Run Derby. He is the first player to win the Home Run Derby in his home ballpark since former Reds slugger Todd Frazier won the 2015 event at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. But as Cubs fans watched Schwarber’s Home Run Derby title slip away, many were quick to point out that Harper “cheated” the Cubs slugger.
As has been the case since the Derby format was altered in 2015, those sluggers will be on the clock, creating the possibility of buzzer beaters and frantic feats of strength at Chavez Ravine. And perhaps this will be the third straight Derby to feature a tiebreaking swing-off to decide a round’s result. Kyle Schwarber put on a show, including a pair of long blasts to give him an extra 30 seconds.

Bryce Harper won Monday’s Home Run Derby in dramatic fashion at his home ballpark. Needing to hit nine home runs in a minute, Harper got into a groove to tie Kyle Schwarber’s 18 home runs at the buzzer. All time , Ken Griffey Jr., Prince Fielder, and Yoenis Cespedes are the only players to have won multiple derbies.
From 1991 to 2006, 8-10 players were selected and hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 10 outs in each round. The tally reset for each round, with the top four advancing to the second round, and the top two advancing to the final. After the first round, the winner of the Schwarber-Pujols matchup will meet the winner of Soto-RamÍrez. On the other side of the bracket, the Alonso-Acuña winner faces the Seager-Rodríguez winner.

Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage. Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. ML batters in all three ML Divisions will use standard Miracle League foam bats and foam balls. Even down to the final round, we had Schwarber vs. Harper, who put on an entertaining round, capped off by a Harper walk-off with his extra time. Sure, having New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge back in it to defend his title would have been fun, but there was no clear-cut winner from this one, though Harper was in front of his home audience.
A round can be shorter than four minutes if the second player in the head-to-head matchup eclipses the total of his opponent. If the second player in each head-to-head matchup surpasses the home run total of the first before four minutes are complete, they automatically advance. This year, eight players – no former winners included in the field – will have the opportunity to win the award for the first time.
If a batter hit a home run using the golden ball, Century 21 Real Estate and Major League Baseball would donate $21,000 (a reference to the "21" in "Century 21") per home run to charity . In both 2005 and 2006, $294,000 was raised for the charities, equaling fourteen golden ball home runs per year. State Farm continued this in 2007 as they designated $17,000 per home run (one dollar for each of State Farm's agencies), to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event.
The Home Run Derby, if nothing else, is a polarizing event at MLB All Star Weekend that’s beloved and detested by many. Home run derby rules have changed a few different times over the years to try and make the event run smoother and become more popular. The swing off reverted to one minute in 2019, the first year in which it was used. Scores will be posted real-time to determine which players advance after Round 1. ML Coaches will pitch to the Miracle League players.Division I players have the option of using a batting tee. It almost makes you wonder what baseball would be like if instead of innings we had a time clock.
In addition, like batting practice, the batter remains in the batter's box after each swing, and does not run, nor circle the bases to score a run. In 2021, the time limit was changed to three minutes plus a bonus of thirty seconds, with an additional thirty seconds of bonus time added if a player hit a home run over 475 feet during regulation. In case of a tie, the contestants get one additional minute. If there still is a tie, each contestant gets three swings, and repeats on ties thereafter.
Timeouts are also awarded in the rounds, with one 45-second break allowed in the first two rounds. In the final, each participant receives a 45-second timeout and a 30-second timeout if they choose to use them. Houston's Alex Bregman, who is the lone AL player in the field, wasn't expected to be part of the home-run hitting showcase, as he ranks 13th on the junior circuit in home runs. If necessary, each player would compete in a 60-second swing-off.
MLB
In the Professional / Celebrity Division, each participant is thrown pitches by a pitcher of his choice, or by a Miracle League Coach if preferred. If he/she swings at a pitch and misses or hits the pitch anywhere but in home run territory, it is considered an out. After 1 complete round, the Top 5 advance to a Final Round of 5 outs per at-bat. In the case of a tie after the final round, a three-swing “swing-off” is played, and if still tied again, sudden-death swings until one player homers. In OPEN Divisions, each participant is thrown pitches by a pitcher of his choice. Each player hits until he/she receives 5 outs in each round.
In the event of a tie, a 60-second swing-off will take place. If two players still remain tied, three swing-offs take place until the tie is broken. Rhys Hoskins tied for the best total in the first round with 17, then promptly opened the second round with an even better showing. He blasted 19 home runs in his four minutes, and also earned the bonus 30 seconds with two long shots. In 2021, Coors Field sees the ninth-most homers hit (1.2 per game) despite it having the second-longest center field fence in the Bigs.
